Volunteers Needed In the Thunder Bay Area!

Hemophilia Ontario has been approved by the City of Thunder Bay to operate a bingo at Superior Shores Gaming, 435 Memorial Avenue, Thunder Bay.  We are looking for volunteers to represent Hemophilia Ontario during our assigned sessions.  At this time we don’t have our assigned day and time to be at the hall but the hall will work with us to assign a time and day that works for the volunteers we have willing to participate.  The bingo hall operates on the c-gaming or electronic gaming model which means our bingo volunteers now are only required to be at the hall for 2 hours and they no longer handle cash or sell bingo cards. If you can give us 2 hours per month to volunteer at our bingo session we would be grateful! The bingo hall volunteers will be responsible for:

  • representing Hemophilia Ontario
  • welcoming guests and circulating the hall to thank players for supporting your charity
  • assist with light cleaning of high touch surfaces
  • An online training session must be completed before attending

Volunteers will be provided a Hemophilia Ontario golf shirt to wear during volunteer hours.

The funds raised at the bingo will support the following programs in the Thunder Bay area:

Program costs

  • Financial assistance
  • Medical research within Ontario
  • Costs related to the delivery of Hemophilia Ontario programs and services

If you are interested in volunteering or you have some questions, please contact Susan Turner at sturner@hemophilia.on.ca

Research Opportunity!

St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and Kingston General Hospital in Kingston in Canada are conducting a study on bone density in women around the time of menopause who are carriers of hemophilia A.  We are comparing  their bone density to women of the same age who are not carriers of hemophilia A. We are looking to recruit carriers of hemophilia A and controls. If you are interested in participating in this study, please see the posters below.

If you are eligible for the study, please contact Grace Tang (grace.tang@unityhealth.to) for more information.

*Please note this study is not affiliated with Hemophilia Ontario.

Expanded Access to Hemlibra for Moderate Hemophilia A

Canadian Blood Services (CBS) announced in May that the provinces and territories have agreed to expand access to emicizumab (Hemlibra) for people with moderate hemophilia A and a severe bleeding phenotype requiring prophylaxis. This means that people with moderate hemophilia A who have bleeding issues can now ask their hematologist to apply for access to emicizumab.

Until now, use of emicizumab had been restricted to those with severe hemophilia A defined as a factor level of less than 1% or a history of an inhibitor to factor VIII.

In its announcement, CBS wrote that “Exceptional access requests will now be considered for hemophilia A patients with a FVIII level of 1% or greater with a severe bleeding phenotype. To be considered, patients must be on prophylactic therapy with FVIII or demonstrate a requirement for prophylactic therapy.”

People who think they may qualify should contact their treatment centre. Prescribing physicians must complete an Exceptional Access form and provide detailed clinical information to support the request.
